Change is gonna come – but not everyone is ready!

without comments

I took a chance and it didn't work.  What can you do?

Earlier this week I was contacted by a recruiter for an extremely reputable non-profit organization for a possible position as their head of web content and community.  The email exchanges were cordial and appeared to moving towards a phone meeting at the very least.
I'm not looking for a job but I'll always listen and follow up.  Anyway, after 6 emails the request came for a resume…. I thought this would be a good time to try some savvy or ballsy tactics.
I responded saying I didn't have a current resume and that they should Google me with a philosophical blurb about the internet changing the world.  In the email I put a hyperlink the search "Laurent Courtines". I felt very nervous to use this approach but thought "Hell, they want someone with social media and web content chops? Why fuck not do it!"
I got the response back….Thanks but no thanks.
Sure maybe my google results might have showed I wasn't qualified or maybe it was too BALLSY to just tell someone to google me.
Like I said, change is gonna come but maybe old NGO's are not ready!

Questions do abound – did I make a mistake? Are my Google results not representative?  How was I initially a candidate but then after not playing the resume game not a candidate?  What do you think?  Too soon for Google?

Game portals are dying – Buy up the ones that will sell.

without comments

Buy Yahoo games.  The don't care about it.  Find the right partner and take over the URL. Just redirecting games.yahoo.com would be enough traffic to take over the internet.  I'm talking to you Zynga, Kongregate and Armorgames. You should join forces and grab it.  Someone will!

Getting my baseball on with El Rey De Los Angeles

without comments

Vin Scully will hopefully begin his 53rd season (I think) announcing the Dodgers.  St. Vincent may miss the beginning of the season due to a fall he took earlier this winter.  Think about this, fans of the LA Dodgers have never had a season without Vin Scully. The Dodgers left Brooklyn in 1958!
What can we learn from Vin Scully?
– Treat everyday of work like its your first.
– Never, ever stop working at your craft – Scully works at pronouncing players names and getting their backstories religiously.
– Be authentic.
Scully has said on several occasions that it is a privilage that people allow him into their homes every night.  He views this as precious and announces games as though he is your friend watching a game together.
– Be humble and let the product stand up on its own merits – as the world has evolved around Scully he never, ever used his position as a grandstand for his opinions. The product, baseball, or more to the point, Dodger baseball was always first. It isn't The Vin Scully Show presents Dodger Baseball, its just Dodger baseball.
– Contineuity, consistancy.
Scully binds baseball to Los Angeles along with binding generations of Los Angelsians to the Dodgers.  In a city, that isn't really a city and represents much of American consumerism, Vin Scully gives LA history just by showing up every season.

Its very likely we'll never see the likes of Vin Scully again.  He is, and has been the best sports announcer we've ever had.   Before this season ends, tune into a Dodger broadcast and share a night of baseball with millions of peoples best friend, Vin Scully from Brooklyn.

Online Disruption – give it away!

without comments

We live in a captitalist world of markets, supply and demand.  Nothing is free – there is no free lunch.  We've all been brought up and indoctinated with selling, profitting and what's in it for me.
We've been at it so long, giving away even a little is frowned upon and people look at you like a loon.  Those days are over.  There is so much transparancy and social interaction today that you cannot just be a bottom line driven unless you have something truely unique to offer. (Trust me, its rare). Where does that leave us?
You've got to give it away.  Give away as much as you can! Its contrary to everything we know but its the last great currency.  If you can give away advice, pillows or sandwiches do it.  Folks are so thankful for a little bit of genuine free-ness they'll love you forever. Get ahead of the other company or employee by being the person or organization that isn't trying to make a buck on everything.  It just might be the thing that saves your job.
